Macquarie Place was formalised as an open space by the erection by Govenor Macquarie in 1818 of the obelisk used to measure distances in the colony. During the construction of Circular Quay from 1839 to 1847 Castlereagh Street (now Loftus Street) was extended which took up much of the park. The obelisk, which used to be in the centre, is now on one side. In the 1970s, with the closure of Macquarie Place (street), the park was enlarged in the opposite direction.
